MSC 3003 - Music in the Classic Period

Tuesdays and Thursdays 2:30-3:45 in Room 4-190
Class 16Thursday, March 26

Some big news

I've been giving it a lot of thought, and I think we should dump the idea of a final paper. We've lost so much time and many of you are not in an environment that makes research easy. It is definitely a handicap that we lost our library.

I'll try to think of something else to do before the end of the semester.

Of course that means that the formula for our final grade will have to be retooled. It will be a mix of our little homework assignments, the midterm, and the new thing I am trying to figure out.

Posting schedule

I am going to follow CUNY's "recalibration" schedule for this class, so the next class is supposed to appear on Thursday, April 2. Then we get a full week break and we return during what was originally spring break, April 14 and 16.

(Some homework duedates are shifting around as a result, though you still get at least two weeks to finish.)

New Assignment

We do have a new unit this week, on Beethoven's intense "Pathétique" sonata. Check it out below.

Take-home midterm

Hopefully we are already thinking about the midterm. Due date is Tues, April 7 but, as I note in the document, everything is negotiable these days.

PDF Version
Word DOCX version

Answers are supposed to be based on the readings from the semester. I've organized all seven of them at the top of our documents page for your convenience.

If you are having a hard time reading all of these PDFs away from campus, I would be willing to mail you paper copies. Just let me know.

NEW Assignment #5: Beethoven's Pathétique Sonata

First, look at the online unit on this Beethoven sonata.

Then, answer questions in exercise #5

This one is due before Class 20.

Old Assignments

Assignment #3: Beethoven's Childhood

First, look at my online unit on Beethoven's earliest years. Then answer four questions for Assignment #3.

This one should really be extremely easy. :)

It is due before Class 18 (Thurs, April 2).

Assignment #4: Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 1

I have another page of material that covers this piece very thoroughly with annotated videos and audio commentary. This takes the place of the kind of thing I'd normally do in class. Then, Exercise #4 asks you eight questions about it.

This one is also due before Class 18 (Thurs, April 2).
